Ryan Carter GLENDALE -- A man described as in his mid-20s was subdued by security personnel Monday after barricading himself inside a hospital bathroom and threatened to kill himself and others, police said. The man, whose name and age was not released, was heard stating he was going to kill himself and hospital staff shortly after 5:30 p.m. in a bathroom near the entrance to Glendale Adventist Medical Center, Glendale Police Sgt. Jim Woody said.

Legislation has been introduced in the U.S. Senate that, if passed, would extend trade benefits to Armenia. The bill was introduced by Sens. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Paul Sarbanes (D-Md.), according to the Armenian Assembly of America. A similar bill is already pending in the House. The motivations behind the bill is to open up U.S.-Armenian trade relations, which historically has involved aid to the landlocked country. In the House version of the bill, many Armenian-Americans in the Glendale business community backed the provisions, which would knock down provisions that blocked free trade.

City receptionist retiring today LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- Rita LeBlanc, La Canada Flintridge's first full-time receptionist, will retire from her position today. She has held the position for two years. The city has handed out about 100 applications for the vacancy, and about 40 have been submitted, City Clerk Marjorie Wahlsten said. Robert Chacon Armenian Chamber mixer coming up NORTHWEST GLENDALE -- The Armenian American Chamber of Commerce will present its October mixer from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday at Chuy's restaurant, 145 N. Maryland Ave. The event will include an appearance of Danny Trejo, an actor in the new film "Once Upon a Time in Mexico."

A local legislator has announced she will join a bipartisan group in the Assembly that since this year's budget crisis has tried to work out compromise among legislators. Assemblywoman Carol Liu (D-La Canada Flintridge) announced she would join the coalition because it was an opportunity to stop the partisan bickering that has beset the capital. Assemblyman Dario Frommer (D-Glendale) will launch the second installment of his cable show at 9:30 p.m. today on Charter Communications Channel 25. The 30-minute program, titled "Capitol Connection with Assemblyman Dario Frommer," will focus on SB 2, legislation requiring businesses to provide health insurance for employees. Guests will include Jack Lewin, president of the California Medical Assn., and Anthony Wright, executive director of Health Access.

A local legislator spoke on the House of Representatives floor Wednesday about a bill that would open up $87 billion for Iraq. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Glendale), a member of the House International Relations Committee and the Judiciary Committee, spoke about what he felt should be in the bill and expressed what he felt was the need for the Bush Administration to demonstrate a well thought-out post-war plan for Iraq's reconstruction. Democrats have opposed it and are threatening opposition unless changes are made.

Do-not-call list to be enforced GLENDALE -- State Atty. Gen. Bill Lockyer has urged Californians who have signed up for the national do-not-call registry to file complaints if they continue to receive commercial phone calls from companies. Lockyer's office and the Federal Communications Commission will take complaints. Telemarketers are challenging the registry in court. Fifty million Americans have registered on the do-not-call list. When filing a complaint, consumers will need to provide their name, a contact phone number, and the registered phone number that was called and specify whether the number was registered after Sept.
