GLENDALE — The San Gabriel Valley 16-18 Babe Ruth All-Stars got out to a comfortable lead in their first game of the Pacific Southwest Babe Ruth Regional Tournament on Friday night, but the frenzied finish was anything but comfortable for the Southern California champions. East Sacramento clawed its way out of a six-run deficit to pull to within one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but San Gabriel Valley picked the would-be tying run off second base to seal a 6-5 win in Watsonville.

GLENDALE — Though she struggled with her short game Monday, Tammy Panich was determined not to let that throw her off the other parts of her game during the first round of the California Community College Athletic Assn. Women's Golf State Championships. Panich, a sophomore at Glendale Community College, shook off a few missed putts and put herself into a tie atop the leader board following the first round of the prestigious event. Panich recorded 14 pars to register a two-over-par 76 at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills.

Reaching the point of exhaustion while looking to extend their season, Viktoriya Shumakova and Alexandra Amor had just enough left to complete arguably their most dramatic victory of the season. The No. 1 doubles tandem on the Glendale Community College women's tennis kept returning shots at a feverish pace during a tiebreaker in the second round of the California Community College Athletic Assn. Regionals on Thursday. The suspense even got the best of Glendale first-year Coach Deo Sy at times.

CHINO HILLS — On the eve of the biggest round of her career, Tammy Panich didn't get much sleep. The Glendale Community College women's golfer said she slept for about five hours in between planning ahead for her final round of the California Community College Athletic Assn. Women's Golf State Championships on Tuesday. Panich shook off the lack of sleep and stepped to the forefront in the biggest moment in her career. Panich fired an even-par 74 to finish tied for first with Kayla Riede of Sacramento City College, but won in a card-off to capture the state crown at Los Serranos Country Club's North Course.

Crescenta Valley's track standout Claire Collison traveled to Sacramento last weekend as the only representative from the Falcon squad to compete in the CIF State Meet at Sacramento City College. Having qualified in two events, Collison ran in both the 1600 meter and the 3200 meter distance races, finishing in the top ten in both competitions. "It was great just to get my name out there and run with these girls," Collison told the Glendale News-Press. "Just being here is a great experience."

GLENDALE ? Eight local boys' and girls' track and field athletes' seasons have at least another week left in them. Nathan Sellers, Annie Sahl, J.P. Thies, Andrew Steben, Ciara Gonzalez, Heather Riley, Katherine Poet and Bliss Seale qualified for the CIF Southern Section finals after their impressive showings at their respective division preliminaries. Sellers, a senior at Crescenta Valley High, took sixth in the Division I 3,200-meter competition in 9 minutes 26.76 seconds.

Two members of Boy Scout Troop 8 of Tujunga have earned the rank of Eagle Scout. It was awarded in front of more than 100 friends, troop members and Scouting officials at a ceremony at the Church of Scientology, Celebrity Centre, in Hollywood, Troop 8's charter organization. Matt Fleming, 18, of Lake View Terrace had seven years of steady advancement through the Scouting ranks. His achievements include Order of the Arrow (an honorary Scout service organization)

Erik Boal GLENDALE -- It happened again. Despite leading for almost the entire 3,200-meter race Saturday night at the CIF State Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Hoover High senior distance runner Anita Siraki suffered the cruelest case of deja vu one could imagine. For the second time in nearly seven months, Siraki's friend and future Stanford University teammate, Santa Rosa Montgomery's Sara Bei, outkicked the defending state champion in the final 100 meters to win by the narrowest of margins.

NORWALK — On a chilly evening, Claire Collison had mixed emotions. On one hand, the Crescenta Valley High junior girls' distance runner was elated about qualifying in two events for the CIF State Meet following Friday night's performances at the Masters Meet at Cerritos College. She also felt sadness because her teammate and close friend, Rachel Lange, just missed joining her to compete at the state meet. Collison kept her emotions in check while on the track Friday, as she qualified for the state meet in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter events.

GLENDALE — Claire Collison traveled to Sacramento on a mission to prove that she could run with the best of the best. Competing in two distance events, the Crescenta Valley High track and field standout proved her worth, finishing with a pair of top-10 finishes in both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter races during Saturday's CIF State Meet at Sacramento City College's Hughes Stadium. The junior ran a personal best of 4 minutes 50.39 seconds in the 1,600, good enough for seventh and a 10:46.
