With essentially a brand new cast of players, the Glendale Community College women's tennis team did something it hadn't done since 1999 - qualify for the Southern California Regionals. While the Vaqueros would have liked to have extended their season, they made strides to improve the program's outlook. "It's a tremendous reward just to get this far," Glendale assistant Coach Deo Sy said after seventh-seeded Glendale suffered a 5-0 road loss to second-seeded Mt. San Antonio College in a first-round match Tuesday.

Qualifying to Saturday's CIF Southern Section Track and Field Divisional Championships at Mt. San Antonio College required the local entrants who earned such advancement to turn in very good results at last weekend's divisional prelims all over Southern California. This weekend, however, the bar will be raised from very good to exceptional. Of course, that's to be expected as divisional championships and CIF-Southern Section Masters Meet berths are on the line with the trip to Cerritos College available for the top 12 finishers in the 800-meter, 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs and top nine in every other event.

A cross-country season that officially began in the sweltering heat of late August concluded on an overcast day in December for a pair of Crescenta Valley High runners. Falcons juniors Gabe Collison and Nick Beatty both competed and ended their 2012 campaigns with varying degrees of success at Saturday morning's boys' seeded race at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships West Regional at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. Collison and Beatty, who had both raced at Mt. SAC two weeks ago in the CIF Southern Section Division I Finals, placed 75th in 17 minutes and 184th in 18 minutes 12 seconds, respectively.

From a historical standpoint, the Flintridge Prep cross-country program is on the cusp of something special heading into Saturday morning's CIF Southern Section boys' and girls' cross-country championships at Mt. San Antonio College. The Rebels boys' and girls' teams lead a five-entry local contingent that consists of the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy girls' team, the Crescenta Valley High boys' squad and La Cañada High individual qualifier Anna Frederich, all of which are looking for team and individual titles, while also trying to advance to the following week's season-ending CIF State Meet in Fresno.

With league championship races in the rearview mirror, the business of qualifying to the CIF Southern Section divisional championships is on the mind of the four schools and six total local cross-country teams participating in Saturday's CIF-SS divisional preliminaries at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. For Crescenta Valley High, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy and Flintridge Prep, advancing to the prelims has become old hat. However, the same cannot be said for Hoover High, which made history last weekend when the girls' team outlasted Burroughs, 121-128, for fourth place within the Pacific League, which nabbed the program's first prelims bid since 2002.

WALNUT - While Saturday afternoon marked the conclusion of the season for the majority of local competitors, Glendale High's Michael Davis, Crescenta Valley's Megan Melnyk and St. Francis' Caleb Simmeth proved themselves masters of advancing at the CIF Southern Section Divisional Track and Field Championships at Mt. San Antonio College. All three competitors qualified to the following week's Masters Meet at Cerritos College by posting a qualifying finish. Maybe there was no surprise that Davis, a state qualifier, would advance in the 200-meter run. The BYU-bound senior recovered from a disappointing effort in the 100 by finishing second in Division I in the 200 with a mark of 21.39 seconds.

Scoring goals hasn't been an area of concern for the Glendale High boys' water polo team through the first two rounds of the playoffs. Aside from their quick-strike offense, which has tallied 39 postseason goals, the top-seeded Nitros plan to shift their focus to tightening up their defense in their quest to move into the championship match for the second straight season. Glendale will put its defensive unit to the test when it meets Walnut in a CIF Southern Section Division V semifinal match at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount San Antonio College.

LA CRESCENTA - As with the beginning of any new season, hope is perhaps the one unifying element among a diverse group of local cross-country teams. For Crescenta Valley High, the Falcons are excited over the progress of 2012 and the prospects of 2013. In 2011, Crescenta Valley suffered a disappointing fourth-place finish in the Pacific League and did not advance to the CIF Southern Section Division I prelims. Last season, the Falcons stepped up in challenging national power Arcadia before finishing runner-up at the Pacific League finals at Crescenta Valley Park and eventually advancing to and finishing 11th at the Division I finals at Mt. San Antonio College.

Somewhere between uncertainty and faith is where Crescenta Valley High sophomore Megan Melnyk finds herself. The La Crescenta resident is one of three local athletes who qualified to Friday night's prestigious CIF Southern Section Track and Field Masters Meet at Cerritos College in Norwalk. Melnyk is slated to participate in the girls' 800-meter run at 7:22 p.m., either hoping to garner a top-six finish or hit the at-large qualifying mark of 2 minutes, 12.10 seconds to advance to the following week's season-ending CIF State Track and Field Championships at Clovis Buchanan High on May 31 and June 1. Ask Melnyk how she punched her ticket to the Masters Meet and her answer is part fact, part fable.
