NORTHEAST GLENDALE — Jamie Avancena wasn't going to make a second base-running blunder. Instead the Glendale Community College softball player ran the bases aggressively and delivered the biggest hit for the Vaqueros. Avancena hit a tie-breaking solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to spark Glendale college to a 5-2 nonconference victory against San Bernardino Valley College on Friday at the Glendale Sports Complex. In her previous at bat in the third, Avancena delivered a run-scoring triple.

NORTHEAST GLENDALE — Andy Marquardt made himself quite visible at Stengel Field on a chilly Thursday evening. In a nutshell, he did it all for the Glendale Community College baseball team. Marquardt delivered the game-winning hit, turned in a clutch defensive play and earned his first save of the season to propel Glendale college to a 4-3 victory against San Bernardino Valley College in a Spring Break Tournament contest. Marquardt, a St. Francis High graduate, said he was grateful to be involved in helping the Vaqueros (18-16)

GLENDALE — For the members of the Glendale Community College men’s basketball team, February has mostly been a month to forget. That changed in a big way for the Vaqueros on Wednesday night. Making its first postseason appearance since 2003, Glendale college posted a 99-90 road victory against Compton College in a Southern California Regional first-round game. Glendale college (17-15) will next meet second-seeded Fullerton College (24-5) in a second-round contest at 7 p.m. Saturday.

GLENDALE - It had been 10 years since the Glendale Community College football team had matched up with San Bernardino Valley College, which traveled to Sartoris Field Saturday. The Vaqueros may not mind if it's another decade until they meet again after the Wolverines defeated them, 35-0, at Sartoris Field. San Bernardino's offense vastly outproduced Glendale in the game, as the Wolverines racked up 500 yards of total offense compared to GCC's 54, including 200 to 16 through the air and 300 to 38 on the ground.

GLENDALE — As one-sided as the Glendale Community College football team’s most recent win was, its next opponent is capable of putting the shoe on the other foot in a hurry. The Vaqueros had a few moments to bask in their 75-21 destruction of East Los Angeles College at home last week, a win that evened their season record at 1-1, but for the past few days have been focused on preparing for a Riverside College team ranked 12th in Southern California and 20th in the state.

NORTHEAST GLENDALE ? Spring break for the student body at Glendale Community College won?t occur until the first part of April. For the members of the college?s baseball team, they could probably use their spring break vacation right about now. Glendale college suffered arguably one of its worst losses of its season Thursday night in a 16-2 drubbing against Rio Hondo College at Stengel Field in the final day of the three-day Spring Break Classic. The Vaqueros (10-14) staggered throughout after playing extra-inning games late into Tuesday and Wednesday.

Even eight meets into the season, two weeks deep inside the postseason and the Glendale Community College men's and women's cross-country teams are still talking about making strong impressions and proving something to themselves. Perhaps that's just the calling card for a program with near unparalleled success over the last decade or maybe there's something more to the rhetoric. Both squads will take part in Friday morning's California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Championships at Central Park in Santa Clarita.

SAN BERNARDINO - A wayward pass intercepted by San Bernardino Valley College sophomore Gerry Blakes ended the upset aspirations of the Glendale Community College men's basketball team on Wednesday evening. The visiting seventh-seeded Vaqueros cut an eight-point deficit to one possession, but ultimately fell short, 74-71, in the third round of the CCCAA Southern California Regional playoffs at Joseph W. Snyder Gymnasium. With the defeat, Western State Conference-South Division runner-up Glendale capped a strong season with a 22-6 record, while the Foothill Conference Wolverines (27-7)

GLENDALE - It was one of those rare topsy-turvy moments over his six-year career that Glendale Community College football Coach John Rome had a downward glance rather than an upward view and was extolling the virtue of not overlooking an opponent. As Rome's Vaqueros (2-1) prepare for their American Division Pacific Conference opener Saturday at 6 p.m. at Sartoris Field versus Antelope Valley (0-2), Glendale's coach pointed his players' view directly in front of them versus a winless squad.
