While Crescenta Valley High boys' basketball player Jimmy Goffredo occasionally winced in pain during Thursday's Western Conference pool-play game against San Clemente in the 13th annual Falcon Classic Basketball Tournament, an adrenaline rush subsided the sting during overtime. Goffredo scored six of his game-high 27 points in overtime to lead CV (10-0)

Charles Rich The Crescenta Valley High girls' basketball squad won three of its five games at the 31st annual Palm Springs Desert Resorts Summer Basketball Classic. The Falcons faced powerhouse teams like Lynwood, San Clemente, Serra High of San Diego, Palm Springs and Santa Monica St. Monica. The Falcons, who competed without senior guard Jeanine Deno, lost to San Clemente, the defending CIF Southern Section Division IA champion, in a consolation game Sunday.

LAWRENCE J. DESMOND Lawrence J. Desmond, 81, a longtime Glendale resident, died Dec. 1, 2002, in a Glendale hospital. Mr. Desmond was born June 18, 1921, in Detroit. He graduated from the College of Commerce and Law School at the University of Illinois. During World War II, he served in North Africa with the U.S. Army. Prior to retiring, he was the treasurer of the Automobile Club of Southern California. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, May of Glendale; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Kathryn Desmond of San Clemente; grandchildren, Erin and William Desmond; and brother, John Desmond of Illinois.

This letter is in response to the news article on the two Armenian associations, as well as the members of the Glendale Unified School District and members of the Board of Education, distributing books to local high schools and other schools. Under the 1st Amendment, I do not see how they could be stopped. However, I find the Glendale Unified School District and Board of Education negligent if they do not, at the same time, make available pamphlets that present the Turkish point of view on the same subject.

Jenna Bordelon Margaret Ann (Margi) Stolrow, a founding member of the Glendale Symphony and wife of the former president of Webbs department store, has died. She was 76. She died in her home in San Clemente on Dec. 31. She grew up in Fort Wayne, Ind., and attended the College of William and Mary. She met Walter Stolrow while she was the fashion editor for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner. They moved to Glendale in 1960. Margi worked as the fashion director of Bullocks in Westwood and would later work for the fashion buying office of Kline-Kinsler in Los Angeles.

St. Francis will face San Clemente in a Division I match, and Crescenta Valley will meet second-seeded El Rancho in a Division IV contest.

GLENDALE — Crescenta Valley High senior golfer Katie Park entered Thursday’s CIF Individual Final and Women’s Southern California Golf Assn. qualifying tournament with the dual goal of winning a CIF championship and advancing to the Southern California Championships. Neither was to be for Park, an All-Area first-team selection, who tied with four others for 60th place among the 88 golfers competing, missing the cutoff of 78 by four strokes with a 10-over-par 82 at Talega Golf Club in San Clemente.

GLENDALE — The following are odds and ends from the local sports scene .   PARK TO TRY TO KEEP SEASON GOING Crescenta Valley High girls’ golfer Katie Park will next compete at 7 a.m. Thursday at the CIF Individual Final and Women’s Southern California Golf Assn. qualifying tournament. The event will be held at Talega Golf Club in San Clemente. Park, a former Pacific League champion, advanced to Thursday’s round after shooting a four-over-par 76 to finish tied for 25th at the CIF Southern Section Northern Individual Regional at Soule Park Golf Course in Ojai on Nov. 3. It will mark the third year in a row that Park has competed in the individual final.

GLENDALE — Katie Park couldn’t have gotten off to a worse start. However, she recovered in time to extend her high school career at least one more match. Playing in the CIF Southern Section Northern Individual Regional for the third year in a row, the Crescenta Valley senior girls’ golfer picked up her game. Park recorded seven pars and four birdies en route to firing a four-over-par 76 to finish tied for 25th on Tuesday morning at Soule Park Golf Course in Ojai.

It was frustrating because St. Francis? normally potent offense was held scoreless, while its usually impenetrable defense had two devastating lapses within a minute?s time. And it all became too frightening as Golden Knights junior goalie Jordan Bell lay unconscious on Friedman Field after taking a knee to the face. Thereafter, St. Francis?

Those driving south on Interstate 5 to San Diego will know exactly what we mean when we say there just is no more spectacular ocean view than the one you encounter while making your way through San Clemente. On a clear, sunny day, and most of them are, it's hard to keep your eyes on the road as you take in a landscape that includes San Clemente's neatly terraced, palm tree-studded hills and the vast blue ocean with its distant horizon. These very same views no doubt influenced Richard Nixon in his decision to buy an estate in San Clemente that would become the Western White House during the early 1970s.

The Laguna Beach High football team had a different game plan for last Friday's Pacific Coast League opener against Northwood. When you meet a program as sound as the one found at Northwood, a team must be thoroughly prepared. You might say that Laguna entered the game against the favored Timberwolves on a wing and a prayer. Actually, it was the wing T, an offense coach Jimmy Nolan installed for the game. "I took a gamble," Nolan said. "I thought I could catch Northwood with the element of surprise by installing the wing T. This plan backfired on us, and we were completely shut down all first half, and it put our defense in horrible position again and again.
