LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE — It was a brilliant beginning and a sensational ending. But in between the showcase of St. Francis High soccer skill came a span in which visiting San Clemente was a bit too much to stop, scoring three straight goals, and therein lied the difference in the Tritons' 3-2 victory over the Golden Knights in Friday afternoon's rainy CIF Southern Section Division I quarterfinal match. "All credit to them," said Golden Knights Coach Glen Appels of San Clemente (15-6-6)

Charles Rich CRESCENTA VALLEY HIGH -- The bone bruise stretches from his hip to lower back and would probably qualify him to enter a hospital unit. While Crescenta Valley High boys' basketball player Jimmy Goffredo occasionally winced in pain during Thursday's Western Conference pool-play game against San Clemente in the 13th annual Falcon Classic Basketball Tournament, an adrenaline rush subsided the sting during overtime. Goffredo scored six of his game-high 27 points in overtime to lead CV (10-0)

This letter is in response to the news article on the two Armenian associations, as well as the members of the Glendale Unified School District and members of the Board of Education, distributing books to local high schools and other schools. Under the 1st Amendment, I do not see how they could be stopped. However, I find the Glendale Unified School District and Board of Education negligent if they do not, at the same time, make available pamphlets that present the Turkish point of view on the same subject.

Forgive them though, if they're not totally grounded yet. Miraculous playoff runs can do that to a team.

GLENDALE — The threat of rain is predicted in the forecast today. While it might be a factor when the St. Francis High and Crescenta Valley boys' soccer teams compete in CIF Southern Section playoff quarterfinal matches at 3 p.m. today, the Golden Knights and Falcons will look to leave their respective home fields with sunny dispositions and continued championship aspirations once the final whistles blow. St. Francis will face San Clemente in a Division I match, and Crescenta Valley will meet second-seeded El Rancho in a Division IV contest.
