SOUTH GLENDALE — Officials on Tuesday heralded the addition of two affordable housing developments at the city’s southernmost edge on San Fernando Road that will eventually add 140 apartments to a mostly industrial area. “It’s part of an overall strategic plan for the city,” Councilman Frank Quintero said at the ceremony dedicating the 68-unit Glendale City Lights, at 3673 San Fernando Road. The $36.4-million project received $9.8 million in city assistance and is already occupied.

Clearing up the pedestrian laws Since education is a vital component in the ongoing struggle to make Glendale?s streets safer for pedestrians, drivers and cyclists, I cannot pass up this opportunity for a ?teachable moment? inspired by letter writer Jessica Diaz (?Confused by police sting operation,? Diaz seems to be under the impression that she was acting above and beyond what was required by occasionally having stopped for pedestrians who were walking across the street in an unmarked crosswalk.

CITY HALL — Residents should expect a series of lane closures and road detours this month as crews enter the final construction phase for the massive $44-million Fairmont Avenue flyover bridge, officials said. The bridge, the largest public works project in city history, is expected to finish construction under budget by October, Public Works Director Steve Zurn said. The project has managed to stay on schedule despite initially being held up as various agencies coordinated planned work near the Verdugo Wash, he added.

I am writing to express my concerns over Councilman Ara Najarian’s push to close the railroad crossing to vehicle traffic at Doran Street and San Fernando Road (“Metrolink looks into crossing,” Dec. 12). An approval of this proposal will present a huge problem for all who cross the railroad tracks going west across San Fernando. One of the easiest ways to reduce, in part, the traffic crossing at Doran, is to increase the green-light timing at Broadway and Brazil Street for traffic going east and west.
