Former La Cañadan Fay Cummings, also known as Fay Miller, passed away at her retirement home in Santa Rosa on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at the age of 97. She was the beloved wife of the late Howard Mead Cummings, who passed away in 1959. She was the loving mother of James and to his wife, Anna Cummings, both of Santa Rosa; and loving grandmother of Shane and Arlette Cummings. Fay was a longtime resident of La Cañada, where she was a member for 40 years of Delta Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. She also was a longtime active member of the Glendale Women's Athletic Club in the golf department.

Santa Rosa, CA - Gayle E. Lujan, age 56, passed away at her home in Santa Rosa, in the loving care of her husband and daughter, on Friday, November 30, 2012. She was born in Glendale on July 17, 1956, a daughter of Walter and Laura (Pollard) Winner. On November 14, 1981, she was united in marriage to Dan Lujan. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two children, Laura Luhan of Santa Rosa, and Keith Luhan, currently serving as a Marine in Afghanistan; a sister, Barbara (Jim) Kaufmann;and a nephew, Jeff Winner.

Frank John Paneno was born on May 4, 1936 in Los Angeles and passed away on March 2, 2013 in Santa Rosa at the age of 76 after a long and courageous battle with Progressive  Supranuclear Palsy. Frank graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in Animal Husbandry and continued his education at Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles raising his family in La Crescenta. He was a law clerk for Edwards, Edwards & Ashton and later took a job as a hearing representative for Wausau Insurance Company.

Brian Daniel Waldbaum, who is assigned to the 2nd Air Marine Wing at Cherry Point Marine Air Station in North Carolina, was recently promoted to sergeant. He is an Air Frame specialist working on Harrier Jets. He graduated from Crescenta Valley High in June 1998, and is the son of Ann Kosinski of Glendale and Ray Waldbaum of Santa Rosa. Andrew W. Choe, son of Eric D. and Jenny H. Choe of La Crescenta, has graduated from the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps Advanced Leadership Camp at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Wash.

George William “Bill” Rogers July 26, 1920 - July 12, 2012 Our beloved father passed away on Thursday, July 12, 2012 at the age of 91 in Escondido, CA. Loving father of Patricia (George) R. Bynum of Greer, SC, Thomas (Debbie) W. Rogers of Los Angeles, CA and Christine (John) R. Locksy of Escondido, CA, he is also survived by eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Born in Fresno, Bill was raised in San Francisco, graduated from UC Berkeley and later received his MBA from Stanford University after serving in World War II. He worked his entire career in the health care field doing market research and product development for Baxter, Pharmaseal and Inspiron.

Richie Maloof and Mathias Dahl proved throughout the season that they were among the best golfers in the Western State Conference. The freshman duo on the Glendale Community College men's team also displayed the same competitive success while matching up against the elite players from around Southern California. Maloof and Dahl will next look to establish themselves among the best in the state when they participate in the California Community College Athletic Assn. Men's Golf Championship, which will take place at 7 a.m. Monday at Santa Maria Country Club.

Marilyn Byrnes, whose life was dedicated to the nurturing and well-being of her family, died peacefully the morning of April 23, 2012. The following are updates on local athletes at the collegiate level. Kurt Lutz (Glendale Community College, 2013) junior, San Francisco State men's cross-country: After helping the Vaqueros to a second-place finish in the California Community College Athletic Assn. Championships last season, Lutz has taken his talent north and appears to have made a seamless transition. Lutz immediately showed he's ready for the rigorous competition at the four-year level. Lutz began his career with the Gators on Saturday by clocking 26 minutes 48 seconds to capture the Crystal Springs Invitational in Belmont.

Man attacks woman and steals her purse A 48-year-old Los Angeles woman was robbed of her purse Thursday night after being pursued by an unidentified man on San Gabriel Avenue, according to a Glendale Police report. The woman told police that the man followed her along San Gabriel Avenue until they reached the intersection of Santa Rosa Avenue, when he suddenly threw his arms around her hips and attempted to grope her crotch area, the police report said. According to the report, as the woman attempted to block the attack, the suspect grabbed her purse and ran southbound on Santa Rosa Avenue and out of sight.

I want to commend Congressman Jim Rogan for his support for the Medicare prescription drug plan voted on in Congress recently. The plan Rogan supports will help seniors and disabled Americans get prescription drug coverage at lower costs by creating group-buying power without Washington interference or government controls. This proposal is much better than the Democrat proposal, which offers no choice to seniors and further burdens an already overloaded Medicare system.
