GLENDALE — Last season has become a distant memory for the Glendale Community College men’s golf program. After going 2-75, Glendale college Coach Greg Osbourne turned over a new leaf by bringing in a cast of freshmen to help get the team moving in a different direction. Apparently, the moves have paid early dividends. Glendale college got several big performances from its first-year players Wednesday afternoon to capture the 10-team Orange Empire Tournament at Los Serranos Golf Course in Chino.

Seven weeks after playing La Salle in a nonleague contest, the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy girls' volleyball team will get another shot at the Lancers with an opportunity to advance to the CIF Southern Section Division I-A championship match. It's a challenge the fourth-seeded Tologs relish with plenty up for grabs, as they get set to meet the top-seeded Lancers in a semifinal match at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Flintridge Sacred Heart. "We are glad to be back playing against La Salle," said Flintridge Sacred Heart second-year Coach Ernest Banaag, who will look to guide the Tologs to their first final appearance since 2007.

Edgar Melik-Stepanyan GLENDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE -- What two things do Ventura City College and College of the Canyons -- the defending women's soccer champions of the Western State Conference of the Southern Division -- have that Glendale Community College doesn't? Experience and talent. Those will be the two main road blocks for Jorge Mena's group to achieve a successful season. "Individually we don't have that much talent and we don't have much experience on this team," said Mena, who is entering his fifth season as the head coach.

Things didn't start off too promising in the beginning of the season for the members of the Flintridge Prep boys' volleyball team. The Rebels were without several starters because of commitments to the school's basketball team that advanced to the state tournament. Once they returned to the court for volleyball, it took them about a week to get adjusted. Since then, the Rebels have captured the Prep League championship before winning a pair of playoff matches. Flintridge Prep's biggest test is likely to come at 7 p.m. Saturday, when it makes the 15-mile trip to Los Angeles to face top-seeded Cathedral in a CIF Southern Section Division IV quarterfinal match.
