Claudia Peschiutta GLENDALE -- Pa Harry didn't much like Democrats. His favorite way of referring to them was, "Those damn Democrats." Unfortunately for Pa Harry, his grandson, Adam Schiff, joined the enemy. Schiff, 40, became the area's Democratic state senator four years ago and hopes to go on to Congress in November. If his parents, Sherry and Ed Schiff, had anything to do with his choice, Schiff could have gone either way. Sherry comes from a long line of Republicans and is a registered member of the party, while Ed comes from a family of Democrats.

Much of what we know about grammar we learn the easy way. Simply by living with a language for a couple of decades we absorb complex lessons about everything from object pronouns to verb conjugations. We may not know the jargon, but we don?t have to. Choosing ?I want? over ?me wants? is second nature. Easy as can be. But there are some things that we all seem to learn the hard way, usually exactly like this: Aunt Beatrice: How are you doing in school? You: Good. Aunt Beatrice: No, dear.

It is with the deepest sadness that the family of Newton Russell announces the passing of our adored and greatly loved husband, father, and grandfather (Pop Pop). He fought a difficult and courageous battle against lung cancer. He went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 18. His family was with him in his home during the last difficult days and final hours. He was a fifth generation Californian, a Naval Veteran and USC alumnus. He served on the California State Legislature for 28 years and retired from the Senate in 1996 with the honorable title of “the conscience of the senate.” He maintained a full and active schedule serving on numerous boards and committees, traveling and enjoying to the fullest his wonderful family and extensive circle of friends.

When Sherry and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary at the St. Regis Hotel in Dana Point over the weekend, we spent the first hour in a dark elevator -- which wasn't exactly the way we had planned it. We arrived in the early afternoon, excited and eager to explore these splendid digs. So instead of going directly to our room, we wandered through the lobby floor checking out bars and restaurants and ending in front of an elevator. When the doors opened, the elevator was empty, and we got in and punched our floor.
