The Holy Family softball team pulled off a stunning upset in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division VI playoffs. The Gaels defeated host Calabasas Viewpoint, 4-1, on Friday, advancing to the second round, where they'll face another stiff test in Santa Maria Valley Christian Academy, the Coast Valley League champion. Holy Family (12-5) finished runner-up in the Horizon League to Sierra Madre Alverno, but Raymond Rosas' squad had no problem disposing of Liberty League champion Viewpoint (14-5)

BOYS' WATER POLO Flintridge Prep 13, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 4: Ben Naecker tallied six goals and three steals, and Mike Detoy added four goals -- improving his area-leading total to 36 -- and seven steals as the Rebels improved to 8-0 with Friday's nonleague win at home. Eric Khodadian scored twice for Flintridge Prep, which led, 5-2, at the half, and put the match away with a 4-1 third-quarter effort. Mike McDonnell added a goal and Alex Sangiovanni recorded 20 saves for the Rebels.

From the release: Sierra Madre Search and Rescue seeks your help in locating a missing person:  Matthew Hernandez, 29, Male Hispanic 5'07" 180 pounds  Last seen: November 19, 2011 6 PM near Chantry Flats located in the Angeles National Forest above Arcadia.  Due to severe weather your help is requested.  Hernandez was last seen wearing a green shirt, denim vest and black pants.

Julie Porretta  Julie, 45, was born in Glendale, California April 26, 1965. She passed away on April 9, 2011 after facing many challenges of heart disease since she was 32. She is survived by her only child, Nicholas Porretta, her sister, Peggy Dennis (Mike), brother, Mark Porretta (Renee), step sister, Michael Ann Schulz and step brother Brian Duncan, step-mother, Mikki Porretta and long time companion, Mike Camereno. She was pre-deceased by her father, John Porretta and mother, Barbara Bessolo.

Three men reported missing in the Angeles National Forest overnight Monday were found uninjured at about 8:35 a.m. today, authorities said. The men were reported missing about 11 p.m. Monday, prompting an overnight search by crews from the Montrose and Sierra Madre search and rescue teams. A Los Angeles County sheriff's helicopter was also used to aid in the search effort. Sheriff's Montrose Search and Rescue Team member Steve Goldsworthy said the men were found uninjured in the Devil's Canyon area of Angeles National Forest.

Robert Chacon Golfers and tennis players will be swinging for stray animals Monday at the Pasadena Humane Society's fifth annual benefit at the La Canada Flintridge Country Club. The benefit will raise money for the animal shelter's adoption programs. In addition to its home city, the humane society also serves as an animal control agency to Glendale, La Canada Flintridge, San Marino, Sierra Madre, South Pasadena and Sierra Madre. The goal is to raise $100,000, event organizer Mia Dunn said, adding that last year's event raised $93,000.

Earthquake awareness month ends with a reminder of the devastation the shakers can cause by looking into the past to help understand the future. And, with the Sierra Madre Fault line running through the San Gabriel Mountains, Crescenta Valley would do well to become familiar with quakes and understand that one striking here could cause destruction of property, if not loss of lives. At 5:12 a.m. on April 18, 1906 San Francisco was destroyed by a 7.9 earthquake. In accounts of the quake people spoke of the ocean being pulled back, the sand shifting under their feet and buildings almost bending before crashing to the ground.

The best kept secret in Pasadena has been revealed. The Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association has announced that writer-director-producer and storyteller extraordinaire George Lucas will preside over the 118th Rose Parade, themed Our Good Nature, and the 93rd Rose Bowl Game on January 1, 2007. Lucas, creator of the "Star Wars" films and the "Indiana Jones" movie trilogy, joins a formidable cast of former Tournament of Roses Grand Marshals. These include Leo Carrillo, Shirley Temple, John Williams, Bill Cosby, Tom Brokaw, Sandra Day O'Connor and the Apollo 12 astronauts.

Theater company to take residence in new Pasadena venue that includes 45,000 square feet of space.GLENDALE -- The award-winning reparatory troupe A Noise Within will be packing up and moving to Pasadena, one of the troupe's founders confirmed Tuesday. Julia Rodriguez-Elliott, co-founder and co-director of A Noise Within, confirmed the troupe will move into the Sierra Madre project, a proposed multi-use project on the corner of Sierra Madre Villa Avenue and Foothill Boulevard in the East Pasadena Specific Plan.
