L.A. police are investigating whether the fatal shooting of artist Joseph Gatto, the father of a state assemblyman, is tied to an assault earlier in the week in Silver Lake. Joseph Gatto's daughter found him at his Silver Lake home Wednesday evenig, slumped over a desk, with a fatal gunshot wound to the abdomen. Amid increasing enrollment and state budget cuts, UC tuition hikes are on the table, A BC7 reported . UC undergraduate students currently pay approximately $12,000 for basic tuition. Beginning in the 2015-2016 academic year, tuition under the proposed plan could get as high as $22,000, which doesn't account for room, board or campus fees. Los Angeles police and city officials are expected to announce Tuesday a reward for information in the killing last November of Joseph Gatto, a well-known artist and the father of a state assemblyman, found shot to death in his Silver Lake home. Assemblyman Mike Gatto and his family will be joined by L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti, Police Chief Charlie Beck and homicide detectives at a 2 p.m. news conference to announce the reward. Officials have not revealed how much money will be offered.

The father of state Assemblyman Mike Gatto was discovered shot to death in his Silver Lake home Wednesday night, the victim of an apparent home invasion, police said. The body of Joseph Gatto, 78, was found at about 8:15 p.m., slumped over a desk in his home in the 2800 block of Bright Lane, Los Angeles police Lt. Richard Parks told the Los Angeles Times .  Firefighters and paramedics who responded to the scene determined that he had been shot in the abdomen by a small-caliber gun, Parks said.

Former teacher and artist Joseph Gatto , who is also the father of a state assemblyman, died from a single gunshot wound to his abdomen, an autopsy confirmed Friday. Los Angeles County coroner's officials said the 78-year-old's death had been classified as a homicide. The time of death was listed as the time Gatto's daughter found his body at his Silver Lake home: Wednesday at 8:12 p.m., the Los Angeles Times reported. The investigation into the slaying -- the first in Silver Lake since May 2012 -- stretched into Friday as detectives continued their search for Gatto's killer.

Following an outcry from cyclists and walkers over a proposed redesign of the Glendale-Hyperion Bridge, Los Angeles officials sent out a notice saying they will conduct a hearing Monday evening . Holding this  hearing  is a smart move. To this cyclist, and I would guess to many others, the historic and photogenic  bridge  across the Los Angeles River and the 5 Freeway is one of the scariest stretches of road in Los Angeles. And this city, enlightened as it is about making streets more hospitable to walkers and riders, wants to redo it. By making it more dangerous.

In the moments after Assemblyman  Mike Gatto  learned that his father had been shot to death in a family home in Silver Lake on Wednesday night , the Democrat put in frantic a call to a longtime friend. Los Angeles City Councilman  Joe Buscaino , a former Los Angeles police officer, said Gatto called him after his father, 78-year-old Joseph Gatto, was found dead about 8:15 p.m., the Los Angeles Times reported . Buscaino, who described the Gatto clan as being like family, said he immediately notified  City Council President  Herb Wesson  and Mayor Eric Garcetti, who lives in the same Silver Lake neighborhood where Joseph Gatto was killed.

Gatto was shot at least once in the abdomen with a small-caliber handgun and his home had been ransacked, Los Angeles Police Lt. Richard Parks told the Los Angeles Times . Investigators spent Thursday combing the home for evidence and talking to neighbors, asking anyone who might have information to contact police.

A police raid seeking probation violators in the Silver Lake area on Thursday morning was prompted by the continuing search for the killer of an assemblyman's father, multiple sources told KTLA. Dozens of officers were targeting ex-convicts with links to past burglaries as part of an effort to find links to a violent home-invasion that left 78-year-old Joseph Gatto, father of Assemblyman Mike Gatto, dead in his Silver Lake home on Nov. 13, 2013. On Tuesday, authorities had announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the death of Gatto, who was found fatally shot in the stomach . Gatto, a well-regarded former art educator, was also a maker of fine jewelry.

Assemblyman Mike Gatto and his family pleaded for the public's help Tuesday in the shooting death of their father, Joseph Gatto , a well-known artist and retired teacher found shot to death in his Silver Lake home. Flanked by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck and other officials, the Gattos announced that the city had offered a $50,000 reward for information that leads to the identity of the person or persons responsible for their father's death, according to the Los Angeles Times . The L.A. City Council unanimously approved the reward Tuesday morning.

At a Monday morning mass for his slain father, Assemblyman Mike Gatto fought back tears as he described the deep pain and sadness that has filled his family's days since his father was found shot to death in his home earlier this month. “Our hearts are broken. We are struggling mightily to understand the dark nature of some human souls,” the Democrat from Silver Lake said before more than 550 people at Our Mother of Good Counsel Church in Los Feliz, where Joseph Gatto's coffin was covered in a white cloth.

As Los Angeles police began canvassing the quiet Silver Lake neighborhood for clues about who may have killed Assemblyman Mike Gatto's father, family friends began arriving at the home to pay their respects. Lauren Wayne, who said she has known the family for two decades, walked past the row of television cameras and left a small bouquet of red and white flowers near crime scene tape. “I don't understand what happened - how it happened,” Wayne told the Los Angeles Times , who described herself as a close friend of one of Joseph Gatto's three children, Marianna Gatto.
