Valentino's Salon and Spa recently celebrated a grand reopening of its family-owned business. Those who visit the salon at 1403 W. Kenneth Road, Glendale will benefit from the efforts of the entire Grubbs team. Mom Lyn owned a nail salon in the early 1980s, and was known in the industry as an award-winning sculptured-nail competitor and judge. However, when the time came to raise her children, she stepped back from her career to concentrate on mothering full time. Now, more than 20 years later, she reentered the beauty industry armed not only with knowledge and enthusiasm, but with the assistance of her two daughters, Katie and Jennifer.

Sammy Buliavac finished with three hits -- including a game-winning single in the top of the seventh inning -- to lead the Glendale-based Arnol Spa and Salon to an 8-2 victory against the Tujunga-based Hornets in the Minor Softball championship game of the Little League District 16 Tri-Cities Tournament on Thursday at Scholl Canyon Park. Buliavac drove in a pair of runs for Arnol Spa and Salon (18-4-1), who were coached by Stephen Kong in the 9- and 10-year-old division, which was having its first Tri-Cities tournament.

A 34-year-old masseuse was arrested Monday on suspicion of offering sex to an undercover officer inside a South Glendale spa, police said. Ling Han was booked at the Glendale police jail in connection with prostitution for the alleged sex offer, according to Sgt. Tom Lorenz. She was released Tuesday after posting $2,000 bail. Detectives received a tip a few weeks ago about a woman who was offering to perform sexual acts in exchange for money at Ivy Spa in the 600 block of East Colorado Street, he said.

Wife-and-husband team Helen McDonagh and Andrew Garsten are former marketing directors in the technology sector who launched what was then the 48th Massage Envy franchise in 2005. There are now 640 locations nationwide. The company's mission is to make therapeutic massage and facials an affordable and convenient part of people's health and wellness routines. Massage Envy Spa-Glendale was recognized by the franchisor in 2009 for having the largest year-over-year growth of any location from 2007 to 2008.

The lobby of HealthCare Partners Medical Spa was covered in Earth tones and a coco-tamarind scent was in the air when Nancy Semaan appeared. "We tried to make it where you walk through the door and you're already in a little calmer space than from where you came," said Semaan, registered nurse and spa director. The lightly-flavored lime and lemon water, coffee and cushy seating in the greeting area of the spa is meant to put customers at ease with an often-times new experience, she said.

HealthCare Partners Medical Spa, a clinic for rejuvenating skin treatments, celebrated its one-year anniversary last week with a little star power. In addition to a spread of hors d'oeuvres and chilled vitaminwater, spa guests were treated to first-hand advice from fashion model Eva Pigford, who won "America's Next Top Model" in 2004, during the television show's third season. "Moisturizer, moisturizer, moisturizer," Pigford said. But moisturizer isn't the only product or treatment Pigford uses to maintain a look that has landed the 22-year-old several film and television roles, she said.

Opening a new business during the nation’s economic downturn can be risky, but Spa Pura owners Ben Chun and Michelle Ju think their massage and skin care business will weather the storm. The pair understand that people are cutting back on spending, but Ju said people should treat themselves during these tough economic times. “I like to give people a good place where they can relax and they can relieve their stress with not too much expense,” Ju said. Chun and Ju knew they would have to make their prices affordable to make it through the recession, Spa Pura marketing director Kristen Spaun said.
