Strip Mall

When I read in last week's Valley Sun about the future of the May-Lane property ("The past and future of the May-Lane Motel," CV Sun, June 11), I couldn't believe that we actually were going to be getting a family restaurant and not another strip mall. I wasn't as thrilled about the other retail and business spaces going with it, but to have a family restaurant here is quite an undertaking. I have been complaining for years about. La Crescenta (including the annex) has way too many strip malls already.

Darleene Barrientos Two burglars looking to steal money from a bakery's automated teller machine backed their truck through a plate-glass window early Monday and then fled when confronted by neighbors and workers, police said. The burglars broke into Paradise Bakery, at 1817 W. Glenoaks Blvd., about 3:20 a.m. Monday by backing a black Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that was stolen out of Burbank, according to police reports. The burglars apparently tried to destroy the machine by running it over because there were tire tracks across it, according to the report.

Not Another Strip Mall! What's with the new strip mall where McDonald's use to be (as if La Crescenta needs ANOTHER strip mall, I have fought that for years!), it looks atrocious! It looks like it should be in another part of the state, or world! Don't the citizens of this town get a say- so as to the architecture that is allowed in our town? These buildings are very modern and stark, it doesn't portray the small town country feel that La Crescenta has always represented.

SOUTH GLENDALE — Two men who pretended to be customers Tuesday afternoon at a dry cleaning shop on Broadway handcuffed one of the shop’s owners and demanded cash, one of the owners said. No injuries were reported as store owner Suzan Tenekedjyan and her husband tried to make sense of the apparent robbery. Both were working at their shop, Broadway Cleaners, when a man walked in about 12:50 p.m. carrying several pieces of clothing, she said. She didn’t think much about the man at first, but he later appeared to be nervous, she said.

If you are searching for an eclectic fish menu, you would be hard pressed to find one more appealing than Fish Dish Grill Burbank. You can choose from fish and chips to fish tacos or fish burritos, fish salad entrees, fish dish bowls or 13 different charbroiled fish dinners. It is next door to the entrance of Bob Hope Airport in a newer strip mall that includes eight restaurants and not enough lunchtime parking. Fish Dish has a new menu that is not yet posted to its website. Fried clams are no longer on the menu.

This letter is to the La Crescenta community in regards to some potential business locations. I have been a resident in La Crescenta for 48 years, and I am concerned about businesses that are put up in my community. I witnessed the first strip mall go in years ago where Rite Aid is and that was a major change for the community. Over the years, I have seen almost every corner and every large unoccupied lot turn into another strip mall. Well I'm here to say, "Enough is Enough!"

I am sure you must know by now that Vons is rebuilding where the old bowling alley was. That was supposed to have happened about two years ago. Also, as expected, there will be another strip mall on the corner of Foothill and Pennsylvania Avenue, where the old Vons is now. I know I have a problem with that, and I am sure a lot of you do too. We don't need another strip mall in La Crescenta! But it is too late; the plans are already in the works. So since we know we are getting one, can't we decide what should go in there?
