A 31-year-old man remained in Glendale police custody on Tuesday after allegedly driving his two young daughters unrestrained in car seats while under the influence of alcohol. The man, Juan Peralta, initially told officers he was trying to rush his children to the hospital. But in addition to the smell alcohol on his breath, police reported another incriminating tip: six Budweiser beer cans inside his youngest daughter's diaper bag. Peralta was stopped by police Friday when he allegedly failed to pull over after hitting a Volkswagen at about 1:07 p.m. on Brand Boulevard near California Avenue.

"Unusual" is perhaps the only word to describe a spate of burglaries in Glendale on Wednesday that involved lottery tickets, curling irons and more than $300 in cash found between an alleged thief's buttocks. It all began about 6:31 a.m. after witnesses reported hearing loud bangs in the 2500 block of Cañada Boulevard. Police discovered the glass storefront at Cañada Liquor had been smashed and nine California Lottery scratchers had been stolen. Coins inside the store's cash register were left untouched, as were other lottery scratchers on display.

A UCLA freshman water polo player who hails from Hoover High School in Glendale was arrested on suspicion of rape after a female student reported the alleged assault to campus police, university officials said Monday. Hakop Jack Kaplanyan, a red shirt freshman who plays the attacker position on the team, is out on $200,000 bail after being taken to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Inmate Reception Center downtown. Kaplanyan was arrested Wednesday in connection with the alleged attack.

A 44-year-old man was arrested Monday after police reportedly saw him pressing his face against an opening in a gate near Glendale High School and masturbating as he watched a group of students, officials said. Adin Michael Henderson was taken into custody on suspicion of indecent exposure outside the high school in the 1400 block of East Broadway, according to Glendale police. An officer were patrolling about 5:15 p.m. near Broadway and Verdugo Road when he noticed Henderson pushing his face against an opening in a large metal gate which separates Verdugo from the high school's parking lot, according to Glendale police.

A 30-year-old man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs on his way to a narcotics anonymous meeting, officials said. Officers stopped Arsen Galstyan after they spotted him driving erratically on the Foothill (210) and Glendale (2) freeways, according to Glendale police. He reportedly apologized for his driving, claiming he was using his cellphone and dropped it. Galstyan, who reportedly admitted to a past arrest for drug use, added that he and his passenger were running late to a narcotics anonymous meeting.

A 47-year-old Glendale man was arrested Monday on suspicion of driving under the influence after he threatened to use grenade launchers on officers and later chewed through wires on medical equipment, police said. Police stopped the man, Jeffrey Yeager, about 6:27 p.m. when a motorist reported he was following her after she allegedly cut in front of his Toyota Tacoma, according to Glendale police. Witnesses said Yeager reportedly became angry at another driver, exited his car, hit the driver's window and spat on it. As officers talked to Yeager, they said they noticed he smelled of alcohol, his eyes were bloodshot and he was swaying.

Five motorists were arrested Saturday on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol during a sobriety checkpoint in the city, police said. Of the more than 1,100 vehicles that drove through the checkpoint at Brand Boulevard and Milford Street, 722 were stopped and 80 were screened, according to Glendale Police Sgt. Richard Phillips. Police arrested three motorists on suspicion of drunk driving and two drivers for allegedly using drugs and driving, he added. Also, a motorist was arrested on suspicion of driving on a suspended license while 10 other drivers were cited for traffic infractions.

A Glendale police officer who was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence has been placed on leave, although city officials declined to say when or for what reason, citing employee privacy laws. The 26-year-old officer, Daniel Schmit, was taken into custody Dec. 10 in the 900 block of Ashford Street in Simi Valley after he allegedly assaulted his live-in girlfriend, according to Lt. Stephanie Shannon of the Simi Valley Police Department. The girlfriend was taken to Simi Valley Hospital-Adventist Health to be treated for unspecified injuries and then was released, she added.
