PASADENA ? Inhaling the fumes from the floor polish for several hours was only part of the problem for Vigen Jilizian. The smell gave the Hoover High boys' basketball coach a headache, but so did watching his team close out a sloppy 54-45 Pacific League road victory against Muir on Monday night. The Tornadoes (13-1, 2-0 in league) did everything in their power to squander a 24-point lead in the second half. Jilizian vented during several timeouts. "We panicked and we talked at halftime that Muir would make a push at us in the fourth quarter," said Jilizian, whose team won its third consecutive game since suffering a 58-46 loss to La Cañada in a semifinal game of the Temple City/La Salle Tournament on Dec. 29. "I've been dealing with Muir [as a player and coach]

Barreling through several running back drills during a recent practice after attending multiple summer camps might signal that Lavelle Peterson is ready to put up breakthrough numbers and return the La Cañada High football team to the top of the Rio Hondo League. There's more to it than just how Peterson looks, however. It will continue to take some good luck ? and health ? for the 17-year-old Peterson, who rushed for 1,468 yards in 158 carries for an area-leading 19 touchdowns last season.

NORTHEAST GLENDALE ? Maybe it was the heat or maybe it was because the calendar read July, when games aren't all that important. For some reason or another, the Hoover High boys' basketball team didn't come out with much energy in its opening pool-play game in the seventh annual Glendale College Vaquero Summer Tip-Off Tournament. The Tornadoes fell behind by 13 before finally "waking up," according to standout center Zareh Zargaryan, and defeated Temple City, 50-33, on Thursday at Glendale College.

LA CA—ADA FLINTRIDGE ? It started as it was supposed to. A thunderous kill by Temple City High's Donald La was answered by one from La Cañada's Mike Gaudino. It looked as if it'd be the back-and-forth slugfest most thought it would be. Eight points later, the game, and match, took a stunning turn, as the Spartans ? led by Gaudino's match-high 27 kills ? rolled over visiting Temple City, 25-17, 25-21, 25-18, in Friday afternoon's Rio Hondo League boys' volleyball match at La Cañada High.
