GLENDALE — It’s been just over eight months since up-and-coming welterweight Vito “Casper” Gasparyan last fought, a span in which quite a bit has transpired. Gasparyan, who formerly trained at the Glendale Fighting Club, has had several fights canceled over the past months, all while putting down roots in a new gym with a new trainer. All systems are go for his latest scheduled fight, however, when the effects of the layoff from actual fighting, good or bad, and his recently formed affiliation with Fortune Gym in Los Angeles will become evident.

GLENDALE — While the exposure gained from fighting on the undercard of a major promotion figures to be well worth the effort, Vito “Casper” Gasparyan was unable to get what he was most ardently pursuing on Saturday night at Toyota Center in Houston — a win over the unbeaten Jermell Charlo. The Glendale-based welterweight prospect suffered just the second loss of his four-year professional career in a unanimous six-round decision, with judges Gale Van Hoy, David Sutherland and Raul Caiz all scoring the bout 58-56 in favor of Charlo, a Houston native.

GLENDALE — The following are odds and ends from the local sports scene .   LOCAL FIGHTERS BACK IN RING AND CAGE After a card at Hollywood Park, one that would have seen Glendale fighters Art “Lionheart” Hovhannesyan and Vito “Casper” Gasparyan compete in separate bouts, was canceled, both fighters are set to return to the ring in late-August. According to his camp at Fortune Gym, Gasparyan will fight Aug. 22 at the Toyota Center in Houston against Jermell Charlo . The bout is part of an undercard of a Golden Boy Promotions event that will see a light welterweight bout between Juan Diaz and Paul Malignaggi and a super featherweight tilt between Malcolm Klassen and Robert Guerrero . Both of those bouts will be televised on “HBO After Dark.
