The following are updates on local athletes at the collegiate level . Scott Hong (Glendale Community College, 2011) junior, Occidental College baseball: Occidental owes quite a bit of credit for its first winning season in 20 years to the former Vaquero, whose do-it-all skill set led the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in stat categories as diverse as stolen bases (31) and saves (six), while also winning a Gold Glove in the outfield. Hong, now a member of the Glendale Angelenos collegiate summer league team, was named to the American Baseball Coaches Assn.

CLOVIS - Although he didn't walk away with a top three medal, Glendale High junior Michael Davis earned something he can carry with him into next season. Davis can consider himself one of the state's best athletes, having advanced to Saturday's final day of the prep track and field season at the CIF State Championships at Buchanan High after finishing seventh in the 200-meter run with a time of 21.82 seconds. "I didn't do my best, so I'm a little disappointed," Davis said.

Throughout the course of the track and field season, Glendale High junior Michael Davis earned a few prestigious titles, such as Pacific League champion. Yet, on Friday evening, Davis earned the accolade and acknowledgment he worked all season to obtain at the CIF State Track and Field Championship preliminaries at Buchanan High in Clovis. The sprinter finished third in his heat of the 200-meter dash and ninth overall in a time of 21.67 seconds, which was good for the final qualifying spot to Saturday's championships set for 8:38 p.m. "I wanted to run a personal best today and qualify," Davis said.

Mike Davis has dedicated much of his track season, if not career, with the Glendale High track team to mastering the 200-meter dash. It's fitting then that the Nitro's outstanding junior campaign comes down to Friday night's CIF Southern Section Masters Meet at Cerritos College, where Davis will have a chance to extend his season one more week by attempting to qualify for the state meet. Davis was the only local athlete to earn a ticket to the Masters at Saturday's CIF Southern Section Track and Field Championships by placing second in Division I and fifth overall across all divisions in the 200 with a mark of 21.40 seconds, which broke Craig Harzmann's school record (21.45)

NORWALK — Cecilia Nicolas hoped to break the Glendale Community College women's track and field record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, but winning was the only thing on her mind in the middle of the race. Nicolas hit both marks, as she took first and bested the previous record by about four seconds with a time of 11 minutes 06.26 seconds Saturday in the 2012 California Community College Athletic Assn. Track and Field Championships at Cerritos College. "I wanted to break the school record, but at the same time, I wasn't worried about the time, just go and push to the end," Nicolas said.

WALNUT - That little extra weight on the back shoulders of Glendale High junior Michael Davis was the collective aspirations and interest of a region at the CIF Southern Section Track and Field Championships at Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday. When Davis finished second in the Division I boys' 200-meter dash in a time of 21.40 seconds, he earned advancement to Friday's Masters Meet at Cerritos College not just for himself, but for the collective La Cañada-Glendale-Burbank area, as Davis was the region's lone qualifier.

Grace Zamudio and Nohemi Martinez both held the lead for portions of the women's 10,000-meter race that kicked off the 2012 California Community College Track and Field Championships at Cerritos College on Friday night. In the end, however, neither Glendale Community College athlete could lay claim to a title, as both were unable to match the finishing kicks of winner Ayded Reyes of Southwestern (38 minutes 19.15 seconds) or runner-up Analicia Silva of Orange Coast (38:24.60). Martinez took third in 38:27.21, while Zamudio, the Southern California champion and top seed in the event, slipped to fourth (38:29.16)

Gareth and Barrett Weiss might be among the most organized teenagers around. They wake up in the morning and head to school to tackle a variety of subjects from English to mathematics. Then it's off to gymnastics practice before taking a couple of hours to practice their musical instruments. Somewhere in between, there's time allotted in their busy schedules to work on their pole vaulting techniques. It appears they've become adjusted to managing their to-do lists rather well, which is half the battle for the freshmen pole vaulters on the Flintridge Prep boys' track and field team.
