Gary Moskowitz GLENDALE -- Andrea Wilson has high expectations when it comes to cheerleading. It's typical for Wilson, director of the Glendale YMCA's Platinum Cheer All-stars, to ask her kids to perfect the art of back handsprings and spin their bodies in circles while in midair. And Wilson's junior and senior All-star teams are getting their chance to show their cheerleading skills this weekend at the National Cheerleading Competition in Anaheim.

Prep girls’ volleyball make it a close one Flintridge Prep girls’ volleyball came dangerously close to upsetting Chadwick on Friday, but lost by two points in the final game to lose 3-2. The girls’ lost the first game, but won the next two over heavily favored Chadwick. In the fifth and final game, Chadwick tried to pull away, but Prep made it close. With the game tied 14-14, Chadwick got the final two points they needed to win the game, 16-14, and took the match, 3-2.   Tryouts for girls’ volleyball at Arroyo Arroyo Volleyball Club in Pasadena is holding tryouts for their 12-and-under and 14-and-under teams.

La Canada looking for lower-level coaches La Canada High School is looking for a junior varsity girls' volleyball coach and a frosh/soph girls' volleyball coach for next fall. Responsibilities begin with summer workouts and summer league. For more informantion, contact La Canada Athletic Director Randy Boal at 952-4269. Baseball Factory holding tryouts The Baseball Factory will hold tryouts for its national tournament teams at UCLA's Jackie Robinson Stadium on May 23. The tryouts are available to all high school-aged participants.

Nitros improve to 2-0 in Pacific League The Glendale frosh-soph football team defeated Pacific League favorite Arcadia, 24-14, on Friday, improving to 3-3 on the season and 2-0 in the Pacific League. The Nitros, who won the frosh-soph league title in 2001, trailed, 14-12, in the second half before making their comeback. Quarterback Anthony Darmiento led the way with two touchdown passes -- both to tight end Sergio Rangel -- and also ran one in. Fullback Eddie Lemus had a touchdown run and Bernard Sales had a key fourth-quarter interception to seal the victory.
