Josh Kleinbaum Alina Azizian can trace her activism back to a craving for karmeer pilar, an Armenian dish with rice pilaf and tomatoes. Azizian remembers sitting with her best friend, a neighbor from Nicaragua, at UC Berkeley in 2002. Azizian had just transferred from Glendale Community College, and both were getting homesick. They started talking about their native food, and Azizian wanted the traditional Armenian rice dish. "I suddenly wanted an Armenian person to say, 'Oh my god, I miss it,' " Azizian said.

Gary Moskowitz NORTHEAST GLENDALE -- Glendale High School band member Marianne Tomlin occasionally likes to join her father, Roy, and grandfather, Bob -- both graduates of Glendale High -- in teasing her mother for being formerly employed at rival Hoover High School. Bob, Roy and Marianne represent three generations of Glendale High students that attended the school's 100th birthday celebration Saturday at Moyse field. As former and present students and faculty of the high school mingled, hugged and shared memories of old times amidst red, white and black balloons, banners and flags, the Tomlins agreed it was a great day to be a Dynamiter.

Jim Riggio FLINT CANYON TENNIS CLUB -- It's hard to find that a UC Berkeley Bear and a Stanford Cardinal agreeing on something. But Amanda Augustus and Julie Scott have been able to put their college preferences aside to form a fine doubles team. Friday in the $25,000 Flint Canyon Classic U.S. Tennis Assn. Women's Challenger, Augustus and Scott advanced to the semifinals with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Jackie Trail and Saori Obata. "Coming out of college it's nice to see a familiar face.

Scott Andrew Hounsell, the son of Ken and Carol Hounsell of Glendale, has received the rank of Eagle Scout. For his Eagle Scout project, Hounsell designed, prepared and planted native plants at the Learning Center of Glenoaks Elementary School. Hounsell graduated from St. Francis High School in June. He was senior patrol leader and a member of the Order of the Arrow. Jeannie Rhee of Glendale was awarded a $1,000 college scholarship by the publisher of "Who's Who Among American High School Students."

GLENDALE ? After banner seasons for both Alex Bonifer and Scott Stephens in leading the St. Francis High football team, the Golden Knight tandem will strap on their hats for one final high school game. Both were selected to play for the Private Schools All-Stars in the 55th annual Al Malaikah Shrine game today at 7 p.m. at Citrus College in Glendora. "It's a huge honor," said Bonifer, who, along with the rest of the players selected, stayed at Cal Poly Pomona all week for practices.

The Glendale Community College Lifelong Learning Seminars program provides free classes with open enrollment. Classes may be joined at any time, and registration takes place in the classroom. There are seats available in some of the current courses. For more information, call 243-5196. Memoirs and More, a course on recording one's life story, is taught by Meridith Rish. She shows participants how to record and preserve their memories for themselves, family and friends.

LA CRESCENTA ? Residents, school officials and students came together on Tuesday morning to recognize the efforts of a determined young man in honoring Clark Magnet High School's long-lost namesake. Michael Worley, a high school senior with cerebral palsy, volunteered to help create a plaque dedicated to Anderson W. Clark, whose legacy has largely been forgotten over the years, said Art Cobery, a member of the Historical Society of the Crescenta Valley. Worley also landscaped the area around the plaque, at the entrance to the campus, as part of his Eagle Scout project after members of the Historical Society of the Crescenta Valley approached the school and requested something be done to highlight Clark's legacy.

Edgar Melik-Stepanyan Jillian Davis sat down long enough to despise sitting on the bench. The Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy graduate had no other choice. For the second half of the UC Berkeley women's volleyball team's 2004 season, Davis -- a junior libero for the Golden Bears -- was forced to watch while recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee. As her teammates practiced, she received treatment in the training room.

President Bush nominates local to serve as U.S. delegate to the United Nations.LA CA—ADA FLINTRIDGE -- Robert O'Brien was playing golf with friends in March when he received a phone call from the White House Personnel Department asking if he would be interested in serving as a United States delegate to the United Nations General Assembly. "I thought it was a friend playing a trick on me, and they said they thought there might be a position for me and asked if I'd be interested," said Brown, a La CaƱada Flintridge resident.

Edgar Melik-Stepanyan Jillian Davis (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2003), freshman libero, UC Berkeley women's volleyball -- Entering Friday's play, the Golden Bears were at the top of their game, locked in a tie for first place in the Pacific-10 Conference. But Cal suffered two heartbreaking losses to fall out of the top spot, leaving USC -- the top-ranked team in the USA Today/American Volleyball Coaches Assn. national top 25 poll -- as the conference's front-runner.
