GLENDALE — As a freshman at UC Irvine in 2007, Christian Bergman was thrown onto the biggest stage as a spot starter in the NCAA Division I College World Series. Since then, a standout tenure with the Anteaters has seemingly flown by for the St. Francis High graduate, as him and his fellow Irvine seniors are looking for one last run to Omaha, Neb. and the College World Series. "Having tasted it ... it's one of those things where you want to get back so badly," said Bergman on Monday after it was announced that Irvine would play in the Los Angeles Regional, beginning Friday with a showdown against defending NCAA champion LSU. "Especially for the senior class, it's our last shot to get there."

And finally on Tuesday afternoon, the waiting ended along with the self-described "roller-coaster ride" as Bergman was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 24th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. "It's really been a roller-coaster ride," said Bergman, who was the 470th selection in the draft, of the last four days.

UC Irvine senior Nate White scored two goals to lead the No. 7-ranked Anteaters past No. 9 Loyola Marymount, 5-4, in the third-place game of the Triton men's water polo invitational in La Jolla Sunday. Dreason Barry, Andrew Dunn and Tim Hutten added a goal each for UCI, which improved to 3-1. In a championship semifinal game Sunday morning, UC San Diego's Chris Eichholz scored with 13 seconds left in overtime to give the eighth-ranked Tritons an 8-7 win over the Anteaters.

Ferreira -- Mehdizadeh Jennifer Ferreira of San Francisco, the daughter of Les and Cindi Ferreira of La Crescenta, and Pooyan Mehdizadeh of San Francisco, the son of Nasser and Mahvash Mehdizadeh of Pacific Palisades, have announced their engagement.
