GLENDALE - The Glendale Community College softball team had a chance in the second game of a double dip against Bakersfield College Thursday afternoon to finish a sweep of the three-game season series against its foe from the Western State Conference Blue Division. The Vaqueros were poised to do just that, taking a three-run lead into the top of the final inning before the visitors tied it up. However, GCC dug deep and salvaged the sweep on the strength of a two-run walk-off homer on the initiative of Vanessa Mendoza, giving the home team a 6-4 victory.

After qualifying for the Southern California Regionals and then competing in the Western Conference Tournament last week, the members of the exhausted Glendale Community College men's tennis team made the long trek to San Diego on Tuesday. While the Vaqueros were glad to return to the playoffs for the first time in two seasons, they were not able to shake off fatigue. Fifth-seeded Glendale saw its season end with a 5-1 loss against third-seeded San Diego Mesa in a quarterfinal match.

With essentially a brand new cast of players, the Glendale Community College women's tennis team did something it hadn't done since 1999 - qualify for the Southern California Regionals. While the Vaqueros would have liked to have extended their season, they made strides to improve the program's outlook. "It's a tremendous reward just to get this far," Glendale assistant Coach Deo Sy said after seventh-seeded Glendale suffered a 5-0 road loss to second-seeded Mt. San Antonio College in a first-round match Tuesday.

After advancing five singles players and a pair of doubles teams into the Western State Conference Tournament, the Glendale Community College men's tennis team saw first hand just how tough the event gets in the second day of competition Saturday. When all was said and done, Gaspar Macalutas was the only Vaqueros singles player to definitively push on toward the Southern California Regional Tournament, which is set for April 25-28 as part of the Ojai Invitational, at Ventura College.

GLENDALE - Angel Rodriguez felt some extra pressure coming into the Glendale Community College baseball team's critical contest with College of the Canyons Thursday at Stengel Field. The Vaqueros starting pitcher didn't mind the extra meaning on the Western State Conference South Division game, tossing eight shutout innings to lead his team to a 6-1 win that broke a four-game losing streak and kept it in first place. GLENDALE - On the verge of handing College of the Canyons softball team its first division defeat, things suddenly got out of hand for Glendale Community College. For six innings in the second game of a Western State Conference Blue Division doubleheader Thursday, the Vaqueros limited the powerful Cougars to one run. The seventh inning wouldn't prove to be kind to the Vaqueros, who surrendered eight runs en route to a 9-4 defeat. Glendale suffered a 12-3 loss in the first game, which was called after six innings because of the nine-run mercy rule.

Before heading north to compete in a Western State Conference match at Santa Maria Country Club on Monday, several members of the Glendale Community College men's golf team checked the weather forecast for the area. The weather called for sunny conditions. When the Vaqueros arrived at the venue, however, they found themselves set to compete in the rain. Glendale shrugged off the weather elements and finished third with a 379. "We left to head up there with no umbrellas," said Glendale college Coach Greg Osbourne, whose team had finished fourth of fifth in recent matches.
