GLENDALE - One likely couldn't blame Glendale Community College baseball player Michael Robinson for being a little nervous taking the mound at home Friday night again Compton. It was the sophomore pitcher's first start as a Vaquero. “There was a little bit in the first inning, I'm not going to lie,” Robinson said of nerves. “I didn't want to disappointment my guys on the bench.” Robinson did fine, picking up the victory after allowing one run on six hits, while striking out seven in six innings as Glendale defeated Compton 8-3 at Stengel Field in a nonconference game.

SANTA MONICA - Facing a six-point deficit with 47 seconds to go, the Glendale Community College men's basketball team launched a valiant comeback to cut Santa Monica College's lead to two in 19 seconds. That's as close as the Vaqueros would get in their Western State Conference South Division road game and 81-75 loss to the Corsairs, who hit their free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory Saturday. “We tried to claw back into the game; we made a good effort at it,” Vaquero sophomore guard Mark Hicks said.

With depth and a promising freshmen class, there's plenty of optimism surrounding the Glendale Community College men's and women's track and field teams. The Vaqueros, who will begin their season Feb. 16 at the Pomona-Pitzer All Comers Meet, figure to use their depth to contend for individual Western State Conferences titles with an eye toward challenging for the conference team championships. “We feel like we have the talent to do some damage, from conference to state,” said Glendale college Coach Eddie Lopez, who guided the men's and women's cross-country squads to second-place finishes at state in November.

During the past three seasons, the Glendale Community College men's golf team has enjoyed its share of success participating in the Tee-Off Classic. The Vaqueros captured the two-day event last season after winning it in 2010 at Los Serranos Country Club. With those accomplishments documented, Glendale entered this season with virtually a new team. And it was one that had little knowledge about the Chino Hills-based course. Glendale finished third in the 14-team tournament Wednesday, shooting a 760. “I'm very disappointed from the standpoint that we weren't able to get in a practice round because hardly any of our guys have played here before,” Glendale Coach Greg Osbourne said.

GLENDALE - Even without the benefit of a hit, the members of the Glendale Community College still enjoyed a huge opening inning during a pool-play game of their tournament Friday night at the Glendale Sports Complex. The Vaqueros showed patience at the plate while batting for nearly 20 minutes, racking up five walks and scoring five runs. The Glendale coaching staff wasn't even aware the Vaqueros hadn't registered a hit. “I thought maybe we had one or two hits,” said Glendale assistant Sal Pizzo, who saw Glendale pick up an 11-0 victory against Gateway College (Ariz.)

GLENDALE - After spending the past several weeks practicing against one another in preparation for the season, the members of the Glendale Community College men's tennis team finally broke a sweat Tuesday afternoon. With its season pushed back a few days because of inclement weather, Glendale college, featuring an all-freshmen lineup, took to the court and passed its first teat with a 9-0 nonconference home win against Cypress. "It's a brand new team and it's a challenge for each of them being freshmen," said Glendale Coach Bob MacKay, whose team was originally slated to begin its season Friday with a nonconference home contest against Mount San Antonio College, but the match was postponed because of rain.
