For a pair of singles players and a doubles tandem on the Glendale Community College women's team, it was about survival during the first day of the Western State Conference Tournament. That's precisely what singles athletes Sofia Tavitian and Alexandra Amor and the tandem of Sydney Farzadkish and Ashley Sumudio managed to do Friday during the early rounds of the event Friday at El Camino Real Park in Ventura. “They were all tested pretty much,” Glendale assistant Coach Deo Sy said.

After playing a difficult regular-season schedule, the members of the Glendale Community College men's tennis team looked to see how that would prepare them for the Western State Conference Tournament. The event began Friday at Ventura College, with the Vaqueros picking up plenty of impressive results. Five singles players and two doubles teams navigated their way through the early rounds. “Right now, it's about playing better and that's exactly what they are doing,” said Glendale college Coach Bob MacKay, whose team finished tied for second in the conference with Santa Barbara City College and will find out Sunday if it will qualify for the Southern California Regionals.

For the Glendale Community College softball team, the postseason will begin much the same as the regular season did - with an early matchup with Ventura College. The first meeting carried little importance - Ventura edged Glendale, 2-0, for its first loss of the season in a Vaquero Softball Classic contest, but the Vaqueros still advanced anyway when the Pirates were unable to play in the tournament finals. The stakes are much higher now, as the teams are now set to do battle in the opening round of the 2012 California Community College Athletic Assn.

GLENDALE — From their days as a standout doubles team at Glendale High, Glendale Community College women's tennis players Samantha Sismundo and Sevana Zargarian have been a package deal. Continuing that trend, they will both make an appearance at the upcoming Southern California Regionals as a doubles team, but only one of the two advanced to the regionals as a singles competitor out of the round of 16 in the Western State Conference Tournament at Ventura College on Saturday.

GLENDALE — Glendale Community College men's tennis doubles players Alex Sarkissian and Trevor Campbell repeatedly proved that they could dominate during the regular-season portion of Western State Conference play. The duo showed it could also do the same in the conference tournament. Sarkissian and Campbell punched their ticket to the Southern California Regionals by sweeping their two sets on Friday at Ventura College. The top-seeded doubles team earned a first-round bye and automatically qualified for the round-of-16, which will be played today.

GLENDALE — A lack of course familiarity has been a recurring problem for the members of the Glendale Community College men’s golf team throughout the season. The Vaqueros, a third-year program, have played the majority of their matches this campaign on courses that they have only read about. No practice rounds and not being able to learn all the quirks of a course make things even more difficult. The Vaqueros tried their luck Monday during a Western State Conference match at Saticoy Country Club in Somis.
