WOMEN?S TRACK AND FIELD Vaqueros post conference meet victory: Glendale college turned in an impressive performance Feb. 12 at the first of four Western State Conference meets. The Vaqueros won the meet with 116 points, followed by College of the Canyons (45 points), Santa Barbara City College (19) and Santa Monica City College (4). Glendale college?s Samantha Bogatz set a school record to capture the 100 meters in 12.23 seconds. Bogatz also captured the 200 (25.55)

This is the first of eight consecutive editions in which the News-Press looks back at the area’s 2008-09 seasons, school by school, before looking ahead at the year to come. The Glendale Community College 2008-09 sports season didn’t feature any state championships like the previous one. However, there turned out to be quite a few milestones with respect to the Vaquero teams and individuals turning in quality efforts in state events. Several teams vied for state glory with the powerful women’s cross-country team finishing second at the state meet after winning the crown in 2007.

Vaqueros advance to next round -- most likely The Glendale Community College men's tennis team was the heavy favorite in Tuesday's Southern California Regional opener against Bakersfield. So the fact that the Renegades never showed up for the playoff contest at Glendale College didn't really make a difference. The Vaqueros, seeded second in Southern California after winning the Western State Conference title, were set to host Bakersfield, which finished third in the Western State Conference.

GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL Holy Family in Whittier Tournament: The Gaels won four of six games in pool-play competition at Saturday's tournament, losing to eventual semifinalist Whittier California, 25-9, 25-13, and defeating El Monte Arroyo, 25-19, 25-17, and Norwalk, 25-14, 25-20. Holy Family then earned the No. 11 seed in the playoffs and lost to Tustin, 25-22. For the Gaels, Laura Estrada tallied 27 kills and five blocks in the tournament, Melanie Figueroa had 20 kills, eight blocks and seven aces, and Angie Gutierrez had three kills, five aces and 58 assists.

GLENDALE — Once they arrived in Palm Desert for the Southern California Regionals on Tuesday, the members of the Glendale Community College men’s tennis team didn’t have much time to bask in the fine season that got them there. Faced with windy conditions and stiff competition, the Vaqueros were thoroughly overmatched by College of the Desert, the No. 1-ranked team in the state, 5-0. “[The Roadrunners] are a good team and I have no qualms, our guys battled pretty good,” veteran Glendale college Coach Bob MacKay said.

BOYS' GOLF Crescenta Valley 432, Arcadia 439, Burroughs 482, Burbank 554: The Falcons captured the Pacific League Quad Match No. 1 on Monday at Oakmont Country Club behind low medalist Justin Yu's 81 on the par 71 course. John Huh (82) and Bill Varsh (87) each finished with solid rounds for Crescenta Valley. On Tuesday, Dominic Lingua carded a one-under par 33 to lead the Falcons (4-0) to a 219-246 win against Glendale in a Pacific League match at Chevy Chase Country Club.
