GLENDALE — By virtue of playing their best tennis late in the season, a pair of Glendale Community College men’s doubles teams arrived on the doorstep of qualifying for the Community College State Playoffs. For the teams of Emanuel Haug and Joey Tresierras and Dinusha Wijesuriya and Paul Nagapetyan, the possibility of moving to the state tournament beckoned. Unfortunately for each tandem, they ran into some of the top competition in the state. Both Glendale squads saw their seasons end Friday afternoon by falling in a round-of-16 match at the Southern California Regionals at Cal State Northridge.

GLENDALE — While neither the Glendale Community College men’s or women’s tennis team qualified for the Southern California Regionals this season, both squads still have some unfinished business to attend to. Each of the Vaquero squads started their pursuit Friday at their respective Western State Conference tournaments. The men’s team participated in Santa Barbara, while the women’s team competed in Ventura. Both teams received some quality first-day results with two men’s singles players moving on and one women’s singles player and three doubles teams advancing to the round of 16 today.

NORTHEAST GLENDALE — For weeks, the members of the Glendale Community College men’s tennis team have had their sights set on competing against Santa Barbara City College. In recent seasons, Santa Barbara has proven to be a worthy opponent for Glendale college, which pulled out a pair of wins against Santa Barbara last season en route to placing second in the Western State Conference and advancing to the Southern California Regionals. Glendale college and Santa Barbara wasted little time getting to know each other during a conference opener for both teams Tuesday afternoon.

GLENDALE — The expectations are clear for the Glendale Community College men’s and women’s track and field teams — compete for Western State Conference titles and send as large a contingent as possible to the State Championships in May. Both squads kick off their 2010 season at 8:30 a.m. today in the CSUN All Comers meet at Cal State Northridge. For the women’s team, the primary objective will be defending the conference crown it won last year, the program’s first since 1981.
