Hamlet Nalbandyan Maybe, the regular season doesn't matter much after all. That proved to be the case Tuesday night for the L.A. Windward High boys' volleyball team. The Wildcats had lost to Flintridge Prep in a tournament match in mid-March, but it was an entirely different story when the two met in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division V playoffs. Windward, despite a rocky start, looked like the superior team at the Rebel gym, posting a 22-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-18 victory to advance to the May 26 semifinals, where it will meet the winner of Pasadena La Salle and Huntington Beach Brethren Christian.

Erik Boal Sean Beattie knows his Flintridge Prep boys' volleyball squad has the potential to enjoy a great season. The Rebels return two proven hitters in Dennis Flynn and Prescott Gadd, a number of scrappy defenders -- namely Jordan Nomura -- and a strong bench, which was recently bolstered with the addition of Tim Mercer and Mike Simon. However, those components never really had a chance to be showcased in Thursday night's quarterfinal match of the 10th annual Providence Tournament.

Charles Rich Known around the area for rebounding in basketball, Mike Simon quickly developed a new talent in another sport. Palming the ball isn't allowed in basketball, but Simon used that part of his hand to help the Flintridge Prep boys' volleyball team crack the win column. Flintridge Prep got seven consecutive points with Simon serving in the second game to lead the Rebels to a 25-21, 25-14 victory against defending CIF Southern Section Division V champion Windward in a first-round match of the 12th annual Providence Tournament at Providence High on Thursday.

Long before Dylan Walker first competed in a varsity boys? volleyball match, Flintridge Prep Coach Sean Beattie had an inkling that better days might lie ahead. While Beattie doesn?t consider himself a prophet, he proved to be right about Walker, who would go on to become one of the more decorated players in the program?s history. ?I had him in the seventh and eighth grades at Flintridge Prep and could see that he was becoming a great passer who could swing,? Beattie said.

LOS ANGELES ? After Salesian High ended its playoff run last year, the Flintridge Prep boys? volleyball team entered Friday night?s CIF Southern Section Division V quarterfinal tilt with revenge on its mind. The Rebels had an extra year of seasoning under their belts and appeared to be peaking, having reeled off six straight victories entering the rematch. But in the end, the result was the same. Salesian had just a little too much firepower en route pulling off a 25-17, 25-18, 25-14 sweep at Salesian to improve its record to a perfect 22-0.

GLENDALE — When the season started for the Flintridge Prep boys’ volleyball team, its then-No. 3 ranking in CIF Southern Section Division V was evidence enough of the high expectations the Rebels had. Those expectations came after a semifinal finish in 2007, a semifinal run ended by Salesian. Hence, tonight’s Division V quarterfinal showdown has some added incentive for the Rebels, as they travel to Salesian to face the Mustangs at 7:30 p.m. “We wanted a rematch,” said Rebels reigning All-Area Player of the Year Dylan Walker.
