Glendale Community College women's golf Coach Greg Osbourne figured an extra trip to Bakersfield would be necessary if the Vaqueros wanted a superb result in their next Western State Conference match. In preparation for Monday's conference match at River Lakes Golf Course, Osbourne took his team north Wednesday to help them become acclimated with the course that none of them had ever played. The practice session worked wonders for the Vaqueros and it carried over to Monday's match, as they carded a 303 to finish in first place by 15 strokes.

LA CRESCENTA — Aside from a course snafu in the men's race, things went down as planned and in dominant fashion for Coach Eddie Lopez' Glendale Community College cross-country contingent. Behind the surprising emergence of Western State Conference individual champion Angie Martinez, the GCC women obliterated their competition en route to a sixth straight conference title with 22 points to second-place Moorpark's 72 on Tuesday afternoon at Crescenta Valley Park. And in the second race of the day, led by the second- and third-place punch of Ricky Avila and Rico Gutierrez, the Vaqueros repeated as WSC champs, winning an eye-popping 11th title in the last 14 seasons with 39 points to second-place Cuesta's 59. "We ran our best race [of the season]

Currently enjoying a run to the Southern California Super Regionals, the Glendale Community College softball team earned its postseason berth with an outstanding campaign in the Western State Conference. The Vaqueros (27-13) locked up their first playoff appearance since 2002 by going 12-6 in the conference's Blue Division to finish second behind College of the Canyons. As a result, the team garnered a considerable share of conference accolades, as voted on by the conference's coaches, led by a trio of first-team selections for pitcher Brandy Morin, first baseman Kitty Nguyen and outfielder Nancy Pinedo.

NORTHEAST GLENDALE - Forcing turnovers allowed the Glendale Community College women's basketball team to climb back into Saturday night's home game against Bakersfield College. However, it was two late turnovers committed by the Vaqueros that dashed those comeback attempts in a 58-52 loss to the Renegades in a Western State Conference game. “They were ready to go in the second half and that's what I asked of them, to come back and battle,” Glendale Coach Carrie Miller said.

VAN NUYS ? With his game-winning, overtime, buzzer-beater at Los Angeles Valley College Saturday night, Glendale Community College's Brandon Robnett buried the specter of a near-critical gaffe moments earlier. If only for a few euphoric moments, as his teammates mobbed him on the court following their 79-77 win, the freshman point guard's shot also lifted the weight of a trying season for the Vaqueros. "It was a tough one, we played hard," said Robnett, who hit a leaning, pull-up jumpshot falling away to his left with three seconds remaining in a tie game.

GLENDALE — The 2007 season was a step forward for the Glendale Community College softball team, as the Vaqueros improved their season win total by seven games and finished with a winning record, 13-12, in the Western State Conference. Seven members of the team were recognized with all-conference honors, as voted on by the WSC coaches, for their contribution to that progress. Leading the group was sophomore center fielder and leadoff hitter Heather Kelley, an all-conference second-team selection a year ago, who garnered the team's only first-team selection this year.

GLENDALE - It's hard to imagine a half of basketball going much worse for Glendale Community College's women's team than the first half of Saturday afternoon's Western State Conference South Division tilt with Santa Monica College. But the Vaqueros turned things around in the second half, overcoming a 16% shooting performance in the first half to defeat the Corsairs, 83-77, in overtime. Glendale (15-10, 6-3 Western State Conference South) entered the second half down 15 points, but battled back to tie the score at 74 with 25.7 seconds remaining in the contest on two free throws from the game's leading scorer, Samantha Pyros.

Glendale Community College's baseball team is well aware of its recent history. The Vaqueros have won three consecutive Western State Conference Southern Division championships, they just had four players named to the preseason All-American list and they're ranked in the top 10 by the California Community College Athletic Assn. Their success has been noticed by high school athletes wishing to continue to play at the next level and other community college players, including David Whitaker, a Crescenta Valley High graduate who transferred to Glendale college from Pasadena City College.

OXNARD - High hopes and a winning tradition for the Glendale Community College cross-country program begin with Western State Conference titles. Those hopes were, at least, somewhat dashed Thursday afternoon under gloomy skies at Oxnard College. Though it wasn't their best performance, the GCC women's team easily prevailed in winning a ninth straight WSC championship, but it was the men's result that left a bitter conclusion to the day for the Vaqueros. GCC's men's squad's string of conference crowns was halted at five, as College of the Canyons edged the Vaqueros, 43-49, roughly 40 minutes after the GCC women defeated runner-up Moorpark, 56-105.

GLENDALE - Prior to his team's game against L.A. Mission on Tuesday, Glendale Community College baseball Coach Chris Cicuto expressed faith in starting pitcher Angel Rodriguez. That's quite the vote of confidence considering the 2013 Western State Conference South title was on the line. “Glad I was right,” Cicuto laughed, clearly enjoying Glendale's 4-1 victory against L.A. Mission at Stengel Field that gave the Vaqueros their third consecutive WSC South crown. Glendale improved to 24-10 overall, but more importantly 18-4 in conference, two games ahead of second-place Bakersfield with two games remaining.

SANTA BARBARA - From the start, Grace Zamudio left little doubt of her continued dominance. For the Glendale Community College women's cross-country team as a whole, however, it wasn't until the end that its own continued dominance was safely in place. On a windy Tuesday afternoon at Leadbetter Park in Santa Barbara, Zamudio continued her sensational sophomore season, winning the Western State Conference championship, while her teammates rallied over the final kilometer to ensure the GCC women their eighth straight conference title.

SIMI VALLEY - Should the Glendale Community College women's golf team win a second straight Western State Conference championship, it might look back at what transpired during Monday's conference match as being quite significant. Glendale college came into the latest round at Simi Hills Golf Course having won three of the first four conference matches. Wednesday proved to be the closet battle that the Vaqueros have encountered this season. The Vaqueros and rival College of the Canyons finished tied for first with scores of 321, but Glendale won in a tiebreaker by virtue of its fifth scorer shooting three strokes lower than Canyons.

With last year's historic squad having won the Western State Conference before advancing all the way to the state tournament, the 2012 Glendale Community College baseball team inherited a lofty standard of success, even though it featured few holdovers from its predecessor. The Vaqueros lived up to the expectations and effectively maintained Glendale's status as a contender, as the team is currently back in the playoffs. They also brought home the program's second straight WSC South Division title and reaped the rewards when the all-conference team was released recently.
