Glendale is blessed with a wide variety of restaurants. They range from salt-of-the-earth coffee shops to expensive or trendy ones, standard American fare to ethnic or fusion cuisine, chains to one-of-a kind, quiet elegance to raucous bistro, campy, or kitschy. Last night, my family and I discovered another gem: Palmer International Cuisine. It is a cozy, affordable place where the owners cook and serve freshly made, authentic Middle Eastern cuisine. My family and I ate dinner there on a dark and rainy Thursday night.

In their cozy Sierra Madre apartment, the couple proudly displays an empty three-liter bottle of wine converted into a very pretty lamp. "Bill saved the bottle from the party where we met, had it made into a lamp and gave it to us for a wedding present."

The fair was open to students from kindergarten to sixth grade. The students each chose their own question to answer, such as, "How does a mirror change a picture?" The students then have to form a hypothesis, conduct a scientific procedure and reach a conclusion.

There is a lot of discussion in our nation these days about the growing epidemic of obesity and its causes. Although the root cause of people being overweight is that we eat too much and don't get enough exercise, I'm starting to think the grocery store deserves part of the blame. I might not have come to this conclusion, except that I took a hiatus from the grocery store during the strike. At first it was a pain, but quickly I figured out that I could get just about everything I needed at Trader Joe's and Target and Sav-On.
