Roberts Started Service I'm writing in response to the letter from Roy Allmon in the June 2 issue about local politicians who use the Memorial Day Service as a platform to further their own political agendas. While I totally agree with Mr. Allmon regarding that issue, I strongly resent the sentence in which he says "This day is in memory of our fallen veterans, not Frank Roberts or ... etc." There would be no Veterans Memorial nor service at the Memorial if not for Frank Roberts.

Mark R. Madler As the morning clouds broke, hikers from the Sierra Club made their way up the fire road into the Verdugo Mountains, shouldering backpacks and taking in the view. Joining club members Sunday was state Atty. Gen. Bill Lockyer, who was making his first visit into the Verdugos. "I'm sort of a High Sierra granite hiker, but this is lovely and wonderful," Lockyer said as he stood in the mountains, enjoying the vista of Burbank and the San Gabriel Mountains.

Since childhood, much of Ross Kelsey’s life has been linked to Boy Scouts, in one way or another. He has been a Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Webelos den leader, scoutmaster, Boy Scouts of America National Council district commissioner and Friends of Scouting chairman. Currently, he volunteers as vice president in charge of programs for the Verdugo Hills Council in Glendale. There is only one part missing from Kelsey’s life of Scouting activities. He was never an Eagle Scout.

Jo Van Amburg If you've been wondering when you'll find out how your child scored on this year's Stanford 9 assessment test, you don't have to wait much longer. Detailed reports to the parents of each of the more than 25,000 students in the Glendale Unified School District who took this year's test will be mailed in the next two weeks, according to Joann Merrick, assistant superintendent. The new Academic Performance Index (API) rankings for public schools -- based largely on the results of the Stanford 9 test -- will not be calculated until October.

Just about the time those bills come due for your Christmas presents, you?ll want to consider the next important gift-buying opportunity of the year, Valentine?s Day. While Feb. 14 is still two weeks away, you?ll need to make your decision early if you want to turn this year into a special getaway for you and your significant other. This year Valentine?s Day falls on a Thursday and that, no doubt, will encourage more getaway travel than if it came earlier in the week. Many couples will take Thursday and Friday off, or leave late Thursday and make a weekend out of it. The upshot: lodgings for those dates may be a little harder to find at the last minute.

Strength, courage, facing adversities and finding the power from within to continue ? these are just a few of the qualities that women fighting breast cancer call upon daily. To honor those attributes and to raise awareness of the research that has been done and still needs to be done in the area of breast cancer, a group of local mountaineers joined others to climb Oregon?s Mt. Hood last weekend. ?It was quite an adventure,? said Mike Leum. The climb was part of a fundraiser for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
